Varkala, India 4 Mar. 2002

13/3/2002
Boy do we love Kerala. They said we would, but we didn't believe them. We have found another place that we don't want to leave. But unlike some of the previous "homes," our stay in Varkala will not be cut short. As far as the kids are concerned, we can stay here until we leave India. However, as wonderful as this small village on the sea is, we will eventually move on. For now, we are enjoying the waves, our incredible room with a kitchen (again), and some Yoga and meditation.

The Varkala Beach Cliffs

Varkala is located about one hour north of the Keralan capital of Trivandrum. It is a small village, which is becoming a popular beaching spot for travellers. But unlike Kovalam, Varkala is not yet a tourist resort, although it very much caters to tourist and may someday become one. Once again we are visiting in the off-season, which lowers prices, eliminates crowds and makes for a very relaxing time. Although, it is rather hot at times.

Fisherman's catch on the beach

We rented a small room with an attached bathroom and small kitchenette. Cooking for ourselves again saves both money and hassle, but unlike in Kakkamoolah, we are eating out occassionally (about one meal a day). One of the great features of Varkala is the natural spring at the beach. Clean, drinkable water comes out of the rocks and has saved us a fortune. We've been drinking it since we arrived, and it tastes better than the bottled water (and easier to acquire than the filtered water we worked so hard for in Kakkamoolah). At almost any time of the day you can find locals bathing, washing clothes and filling drinking water at the spring.

In addition, we have been taking Yoga classes. We actually did a rather extensive market check before we ran into our current teacher (by chance at the spring), who happens to be Israeli. Out of the three different classes we have participated in since we've arrived, he is by far the best teacher (and since he's just experimenting with teaching this class, it's free!!).

On a practical note, Varkala has provided motre than just food for the soul. It has provided food, period. We have completed our goal of knowing most foods on the menu, and have tried a good deal of them. Since some of the restaurants are very small, and our favorite is on the Varkala cliff consisting of a small portable kitchen and two tables, where we can watch how the food it made, being able to watch has helped us to understand south Indian cuisine.

We also had another birthday in Varkala. Maayan turned 10 and we had a rather large party, invited some of the many friends we had made in the town. To Latest Varkala Photos To Previous Varkala Photos
