Mamallapuram, India 18/1/2002
It's Danna's birthday today, and for her birthday we gave her Mamallapuram (pronounced mamallapuram). After an exhausting night in Chennai (Madras), where we arrived at 10:30 PM and had to find a place to stay without really knowing anything about tourist survival in India, we arrived in Mamallapuram, a small, quiet town all decked out for the annual Indian Dance Festival. This is the perfect place to unwind after the rather hectic four weeks in SE Asia.
We've already been offered to build a web site for a guest house in town. At least we may have free Internet access from that. We'll only be here for a few days, but that's all we'll need.

So far the highlight of Mamallapuram has been the stone carvings. This town was made famous from the stone temples carved into the rocks around the town. Stone carvings of all sizes are a major business here, and the kids decided that they want in on the action. After visiting one of the huts where these carvings are made (there are tens around the small town), Shachar was invited to join in. After that, every day we are forced to stroll around looking for a place that will give her a job.
All in all, and despite the ants attack we had last night in our room, this was a great place to start. We were even considering sticking around a bit longer, but we decided to move on. Tomorrow we are off to Auroville, an attempt at Utopia, which we have been told is not like anything else in India.
