Travel Log

Kakkamoolah, India 1 Mar. 2002

It all started with a virtual tourist web site where I met a family from Kerala who gave us advise about where to travel in the area. Among other things, they told us that they could arrange a small cottage to rent in the Trivandrum area. We eventually thought it would be a good idea, and upon arriving at the Trivandrum train station Bibiana and Paul met us took us to this small paradise.

Kakkamoolah Lake

Kakkamoolah Lake is located just south of Trivandrum. We took advantage of the time to relax, swim in the lake, go to Kovalam beach a few times and most importantly, cook for ourselves. This was definitely the highlight of our time here. It has been almost three months since we were able to cook our own meals, and even though we didn't have all the ingredients we were used to, we managed well and were rather creative. Crepes instaed of pancakes, mashed potatoes instead of fries (we tried to make fries, but the coconut oil left a strange taste).

Lunch with Bibiana, Paul and the kids

Twice we took the 15 minute rikshaw ride to Kovalam beach. It turns out that eating at restaurants after cooking your own meals isn't easy, and much more expensive. We'll have to get used to that again. Most of our time here, other than the two visits by Bibiana and the children and our days at the beach, were spent hanging around the house. It was also great to have a phone to receive phone calls. It got us back in touch with family and Tamuz. Thanks for calling, it was important to us.

Kovalam Beach

Kerala in general is very different than Tamil Nadu (and aparently the north as well). They take pride in having the best education system and health care in India, and you can visably see the difference in the cleanliness of the towns and cities. We were told that there are rikshaw drivers with Masters degrees. There is a large Communist Party influence here. They were part of the Kerala state governement up until two years ago and are accredited with much of the progress here. On the other hand, strikes are rampant, and currently the Kerala state government has been on strike for three weeks.

Our home for 10 days
Our little cottage by the lake

We have decided to spend an additional two weeks (at least) in Kerala. We will be moving further north to a beach town, but we will surely miss our small home away from home.
